چکیده

In this paper, we develop a dynamic Bertrand model of competition among hydroelectric (hydro) generators. Unlike other competitors in electricity generation markets, hydro generators’ current pricing decisions affect their future productive capacity through their impact on available water reserves. Our model assumes that each player uses a Markov strategy based on the current state of water reserves, and water replenishment is governed by a stochastic process. Our analysis develops useful insights for regulatory policy in predominantly hydro-based electricity markets, including the effect of strategic behavior on system reliability and dispatch efficiency, the impact of price caps, and the likelihood of collusion.

A Framework of Peak Load Pricing with Strategic Firms

Abstract In this article we analyze firms investment incentives in liberalized electricity markets. Since electricity is economically non storable, it is optimal for firms to invest in a differentiated portfolio of technologies in order to serve strongly fluctuating demand. Prior to the Liberalization of electricity markets, for regulated monopolists, optimal investment and pricing strategies h...

Demand-based pricing versus past-price dependence: The role of retailer category objectives, costs and benefits of pricing tactics

Recent research has found that retailers’ dynamic pricing practices often fall short of sophisticated demand-based pricing models, and has demonstrated that much money is left on the table in the process. Why then would a retailer not engage in demand-based pricing for each category and brand? We examine the circumstances under which demand-based pricing versus past-price dependence is more pro...

Consumer Stockpiling and Price Competition in Differentiated Markets

In many storable-goods markets, firms are often aware that consumers may strategically adjust purchase timing in response to expected price dynamics. For example, in periods when prices are low, consumers stockpile for future consumption. This paper investigates the dynamic impact of consumer stockpiling on competing firms’ strategic pricing decisions in differentiated markets. The necessity of...

Rational Expectations in Electricity Futures Markets? Empirical Insights from the Interaction between EEX Spot and Forward Prices

Non-storability of a commodity implies the independence of corresponding spot and futures prices. We investigate empirically the case of electricity and show that a relation does emerge between spots and forwards. This is because of the links in storable fuels used for production and behavioural biases in power trading. The latter cause a significant influence of the electricity spot price on t...
